Self-portraiture is nothing new under the sun. But, I have used it in my own way, to express what I love about life. Yes, there are people who express themselves differently than I express myself through self-portraits, and some might argue that they are more expressive than me. And, that is okay, because I feel as though I have captured my life in the most honest light possible.
I grew up in a rural part of the southern United States, therefore, I have a love of history, hence my fascination with old cars, railroads and abandoned plantations.
In college, I studied drama, music and visual art. My passion at that time was dance, but in my early 20's, I sustained a knee injury that ended my career as a dancer, that, while I was recovering from surgery, lead me to photography - I needed a way to express myself, and photography was the closest outlet I found to dance.
Without romanticizing photography too much, I can honestly say that it rescued me from a very unfulfilling life. Self-portraiture opened my mind to a new way of seeing myself, and, in turn, lead me to countless opportunities and some of the kindest, most creative individuals I have ever met.
I am not a magician, or even a great artist, but just a Southern girl from the outskirts of Atlanta who knows herself, and has found a way to convey that self-awareness through photography.
